Welcome to the first issue of my newsletter Web3ās Top3. Itās a weekly summary of interesting developments in the web3 world. Each Thursday Iāll send you three bullet points with short excerpts and links for further topic exploration.
This newsletter is a dream come true for me and Iām extremely happy you are witnessing its birth today. Each new issue of Web3ās Top3 will build upon the previous one. Expect to see better writing, newsletter formatting, and many more cool bits and pieces of content.
In the subtitle of this first edition of my newsletter I mentioned that we are going to define a term that doesnāt exist. Web3 has been a topic of discussion on a niche part of the Internet for the past couple of years. However, itās yet to be recognized as an authentic expression by a wider online audience.
Web1 is āreadā, web2 is āread and writeā, and web3 is āread, write, and ownā. The reasons why you should care about this next iteration of the internet may be important enough to make you want to build in web3, and two of the biggest reasons are public goods and new models of ownership.
According to the Bankless Publishing team, public goods and new ownership models will shape the Internetās future. If you want to better understand what web3 is, I highly recommend reading their article.
Are you a marketing person thatās interested in working in web3?
In web3 marketing instead of building a centralized, full-time employee department, you should pay attention to whatās going on organically in your community and figure out how to blow oxygen on those sparks in order to help them grow as opposed to assuming that all of the great ideas and all of the work is going to come from you.
The team at a16z crypto released a podcast with guests Amanda Cassatt and Kim Milosevich. Amanda was the first CMO at ConsenSys, helping bring Ethereum to market, and also founded and leads the web3 marketing agency Serotonin. She is the author of the new book Web3 Marketing: A Handbook for the Next Internet Revolution. Kim is CMO at a16z crypto, overseeing brand, marketing, events, and communications.
This episode is not just for marketers, but also for anyone seeking to understand how web3 communication works.
Youtubeās new CEO is a crypto-friendly executive who hinted at possible NFT integration.
NFTs will help creators interact and build relationships with their fans as well as monetize their content and brand.
According to the popular youtuber ColdFusion, Neal Mohan was a Senior Vice President at DoubleClick. He facilitated the sale of the online advertising company to Google for $3.1 billion in 2008 and was promoted to a senior advertising position at the search engine giant. In 2014 Neal became Chief Product Officer at Youtube and worked on the development and launch of Youtube Music, Youtube TV and more recently Youtube Shorts to compete with Tiktok and Instagram Reels.
In the past Neal Mohan shared that Youtube has been exploring how to best leverage blockchain technology. Even though nothing from his crypto and NFT statements has come to fruition, itās good news to have a web3 positive person leading one of the biggest companies in the world.
